Roofs lift off at the rafter-to-top-plate connection when only toe-nails hold them down. Gable-end walls collapse inward when they aren't braced back to the roof diaphragm. Sill plates slide off foundations when only cut nails hold them.
Each of these has a retrofit that can be done during a re-roof or a targeted attic-and-crawlspace visit, and each is far cheaper than the damage it prevents.
A PE walk-through of the attic and crawl space identifies which connections are original and which have already been upgraded. Priority is usually: (1) hurricane clips or straps at the roof-to-wall line, (2) gable-end bracing, (3) sill-plate anchoring, (4) porch and carport connections that often fail first because they're lightly built.
